Brief History of Punta Cana
1969 – Visionary Investment A group of American investors purchased 30 square miles (77 km²) of undeveloped land. They saw the potential in the white sand beaches, coconut palms, and coral reefs.
1971 – First Hotel The first small hotel opened with just 40 rooms and 10 cabins. Access was limited to a dirt airstrip for small planes.

History
Opened in 1984, Punta Cana International Airport was the first privately built commercial airport in the world. Its creation transformed Punta Cana from a hidden paradise into a global tourism hub. With its iconic palm‑roof terminals inspired by Caribbean design, PUJ now welcomes millions of travelers each year and connects to more than 70 international destinations.

During high season, the airport handles close to 100 passenger flights per day — that’s about 700 flights per week — operated by over 40 airlines from North America, Europe, and Latin America.
